Tobolsk in a family of the director of a gymnasium. After the termination of the Tobolsk gymnasium it was accepted on office of natural sciences of physical and mathematical faculty of the Main teacher training college in St. Petersburg.

1855 I graduated from institute with a gold medal, but because of the upset health it was compelled to go to the south the teacher of a gymnasium at Rishelyevsky lyceum. Having recovered, Mendeleyev in 1856 defended the master dissertation in St. Petersburg and began to give a course of organic chemistry at the Petersburg university.
