Вот раз зимой дед из окошка глядел, глядел, да и говорит бабе:
-Посмотри-ка на этих ребятишек. Какого снеговика лепят! Давай-ка и мы вылепим дочку для нас с тобой, Снегурочку!

So, they went into the back garden and began to mould

their snow daughter… Итак, пошли старики в огород и давай снежную дочку лепить…

-Дед, - баба кричит, - да это у нас доченька живая, Снегурочка дорогая!

The Snow Maiden grew fast, and with every passing day she

became lovelier and lovelier.

Растет Снегурочка не по дням, а по часам. Что ни день – Снегурочка все краше.
The Snow Maiden was white as, a snowflake, very beautiful, but there were no roses on her cheeks, not a touch of color in her lips.
А собой Снегурочка - как снежинка белая, очень красивая, только румянца у снегурки нет, да в губах ни кровиночки.

Soon the merry springtime came,
then hot summer…
But the Snow

Maiden grew sad and listless, she would look out of the window and weep.
Вот пришла весна - красна, затем жаркое лето, а Снегурка заскучала, невесела стала, все в окошко глядит, слезы льет.

The old man and his wife would ask uneasily:
“Aren’t you feeling

well, little daughter?”
“I’m well,” would be the reply.
But she still sat in the corner, and wouldn’t go out.
Дед да баба все ахают:
Уж здорова ли ты, доченька?
Здорова я, бабушка.
А сама все в уголок прячется, на улицу не хочет.

A day came when her friends asked the Snow Maiden to

go berrying in the woods…

“ Come with us, little Snow Maiden,” they cried. “Do come!”

Вот раз собрались девушки в лес по ягоды, стали Снегурочку с собой звать: - Пойдем да пойдем, Снегурочка! Пойдем да пойдем, подруженька!

The Snow Maiden took a little basket and went to the

woods with her young friends.

Взяла Снегурочка кузовок, пошла в лес с подружками.
The day was drawing to a close. The girls disported themselves still more merrily, they built up a bonfire, and began jumping across it.
Вот и вечер пришел. Разыгрались девушки, разожгли костер и стали через него прыгать.
