Education in Great Britain depends on where you live and what school you go to. Education is compulsory for everybody, but not everybody gets the same education. Education is compulsory between the ages of 5 and 15.
From the age of 5 to 11 a child goes to a primary school.
Then he takes an exam "The Eleven Plus" (Tests in Arithmetic and English and "intelligence tests").
If he passes the Eleven Plus, he goes to a grammar school. If he passes but not so well, he goes to a technical school . If he fails, he goes to a secondary modern school.
Pupils at secondary school have 2 main exams, which booth called G.C.E. (General Certificate of Education).

is called "O" level (ordinary). Most pupils take "O" level in about 7-8 different subjects. They can choose everything: foreign languages, history, geography, literature, domestic science, metalwork, art, music. But they must include English and Maths.
The pupil may leave schools when he is 15 (after "O" level). But if he wants to get the higher education, he must take "A" level (advanced). The pupils take "A" level when they are about 18. It is a difficult exam. Three "A" levels are enough to enter most Universities.

This means that all children go from one school to another without being selected according to their abilities.
The selective system – children are selected for certain school according to their abilities.

The private system means that parents must pay for their children education. There are several varieties of schools. For example, you can find:
- schools for boys only
- schools for girls only
- mixed schools – for boys and girls
- voluntary schools often with the religious background.
