Dine moves to New York City. Together with Claes Oldenburg and

Markus Ratliff he founds the Judson Gallery in Greenwich Village. At that time he also met Allan Kaprow and Bob Whitman, as a group they become pioneers in happenings and performance.

First solo exhibition is held at the Reuben Gallery in New York where also he performs the Car Crash, his most ambitious performance to date.

He has an exhibition of new paintings at the Martha Jackson Gallery in New York. At that time Mrs. Jackson produces a group show called “New Forms, New Media” that includes Dine, Claes Oldenburg, John Chamberlain, and Allan Kaprow.
Dine begins a 14-year long relationship with Ilena Sonnabend who organizes a solo exhibition of his paintings in Rome. In that year Jasper Johns takes Jim Dine to meet Tatyana Grossman at ULAE and Dine makes his first lithograph there with her. Dine also participates in the group show, “New Paintings of Common Objects” at the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, California.

He completes his art studies at Ohio University and that same year marries a fellow student, Nancy Minto.
