WRITING

Most of Bradbury's works are short stories of a non-entertaining nature,

containing short sketches, reduced to dramatic, psychological moments, built mainly on dialogues, monologues, and reflections of the characters. Despite the obvious talent for inventing various plots, often entertaining and original, the writer often confines himself to plotless sketches, very metaphorical, full of hidden meanings or not carrying a certain semantic load at all.
Bradbury preaches a literature of feelings, not thoughts. Emotions, not actions. States, not events.

RECEPTION

Bradbury uses his works to advocate education for children and adults,

and asks readers to question their own lives.
“Though Bradbury's topics are hardly true-to-life, they do carry with them themes that we can apply to our daily lives – courteousness, perseverance, flexibility, and self-awareness” (Clark).
Bradbury creates a vivid world of sensory images and fantasy, causing readers to want to physically be a part of the plot.
“Because Bradbury's world is a better one than the vale of tears that we inhabit, it sometimes hurts to close the book and be snapped back to contemporary reality” (Smigelski).

“I BURNED TWO MILLION WORDS,” HE SAID SADLY.

As a young

man, he once burned all his unfortunate weak stories, arranging a grand bonfire in his area. This spectacle later formed the basis of his debut novel, Fahrenheit 451, about book burning and a story on the same topic.

ON MARS, TWO HUNDRED YEARS FROM NOW, MY BOOKS ARE GOING TO BE READ. THEY’LL BE UP ON DEAD MARS WITH NO ATMOSPHERE. AND LATE AT NIGHT, WITH A FLASHLIGHT, SOME LITTLE BOY IS GOING TO PEEK UNDER THE COVERS AND READ THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES ON MARS.”

A digitized copy of The Martian Chronicles reached the Red Planet in 2008, aboard NASA’s Phoenix Mars Lander.

CRITICISM

“Bradbury began his science fiction writing with moral evangelizing or personal

opinions that he infused into his writing, detracting from a work’s meaning. Only since the 1970s has “his own set of values” become one with his works” (Sullivan 1314).
“Bradbury’s short stories, as in Dandelion Wine, sometimes appear to have no connection among them. “It has no more reason to end than it has to begin. Its cause and effect relationship is a spontaneous one…” (Bradford 161).
“Bradbury’s message is sometimes confused, as in the censorship versus societal dullness seen in Fahrenheit 451”.

APPRECIATION

“I was warped early by Ray Bradbury... As a young teenager,

I devoured Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451”. (Margaret Atwood)
“Without Ray Bradbury, there would be no Stephen King”. (Stephen King)
"I can imagine all kinds of worlds and places, but I cannot imagine a world without Bradbury.“ (Neil Gaiman)
“His gift for storytelling reshaped our culture and expanded our world... Ray also understood that our imaginations could be used as a tool for better understanding, a vehicle for change, and an expression of our most cherished values.” (President Barack Obama)
